CHAPTER EIGHT

Even after walking through the entire parking lot twice, she didn’t see a match for her RV. It was frustrating; she didn’t know if that meant the other woman had left—without her horse; maybe she had hired someone to drive it for her—or if it meant she wasn’t the killer. Finally giving up, she returned to her own RV and took advantage of her air conditioning while she tried to figure out what to do next. She thought that, with confirmation that the police were on the case, she would be able to let it go, but it seemed that she couldn’t. She hated not being able to do anything. For all she knew, the killer was out there somewhere selecting her next victim. The worst part was, it might be someone no one would even notice was missing. Since this killer targeted the transient population, there was no telling how many victims they had. Tulia hated the thought that some victims might not be found for years, if ever. It was another good reason to want the killer behind bars; maybe she would be able to give the authorities a true account of her victims and make sure they were all laid to rest properly.

Sighing, she picked up her phone to look for a place to camp that evening. She needed to refill the RV’s water tanks and flush the sewage system, so she wanted an actual campground, somewhere with RV hookups. There were plenty to choose from, especially since she didn’t mind driving a couple of hours for the right one. One of the campgrounds offered a pool, and she was clicking through the website and looking at pictures to see if it was something she wanted to drive out to when her phone screen changed to signify an incoming call. Samuel’s name on the screen made her heart leap, and she pressed the button to answer it.

“Thank goodness, I have a lot to tell you,” she said.

She waited for Samuel to respond, but instead only heard a strange thudding sound on the other end, and the growl of an engine. She hesitated. “Samuel?”

She heard someone exclaim—it was a sharp voice, and sounded like a woman—then the line went dead. Confused, she tried calling him back, but the call only rang a couple of times before getting sent to voicemail.

“What on earth?” she muttered. She sent him a text message and waited, but there was no reply. She hadn’t been truly worried about him before; he had told her his cell service was spotty out here. She thought he was just in an area without good service, maybe camping or regrouping at a motel. But now, she was beginning to wonder if something was seriously wrong.

She had no way of finding out more, though. She thought about calling Marc, but she didn’t have his number, and besides, he was still healing from being shot. He might be able to give her the contact information for the agency
